The 411 on 301 Redirects

Submitted by Spencer Yao on

A 301 redirect is a response status code informing search engines and browsers that a web page or even an entire website has been permanently moved to a new location (URL). A 301 will automatically redirect the user to the new URL and is the best way to insure that search engines are directed to the correct page.

A 301 redirect is extremely important if you have an existing site with traffic that you want to send to another website. 301s will also help you maintain your existing search engine rankings so you do not lose traffic after the transition to the another URL. Examples of why you would need a 301 redirect include:

10 Things to Consider when Choosing a Web Hosting Provider (besides price!)

Submitted by Spencer Yao on

The ten most common things that online businessmen and women need to consider before choosing Web Host, besides price, are as follows:

Number One: Technical Support

In any business venture, technical support is always important. As a website owner, the technical support that your Web Hosting Service provides will be crucial to your business. If your website is offline or working improperly, it will cost you in sales.

Number Two: Feedback Forums

A Web Host that provides a forum, message board, or chat room to discuss hosting issues or to receive help retains its users longer than those without such forums. There is no excuse to join with a Web Host that does not offer comparable avenues for customer support.

Differences Between Domain Names, Web Hosting, and E-Commerce Hosting

Submitted by Spencer Yao on

Many people do not realize that registering a domain name is not the same as establishing a website. To help clear up any possible confusion, we have created the following table to provide summary definitions, explanations, and suggestions for domain names, web hosting plans, and e-commerce. Please take a look at the chart and if you have or think of any other questions regarding domains, web hosting or e-commerce feel free to post in the comments section.

Some people try to substitute a Facebook or Twitter Page for a website because its free, but the customization and functionality is extremely limited. We recommend social media as a supplement to a website, especially if you use it for business purposes.

The 5 Different Types of E-Commerce Solutions

Submitted by Spencer Yao on

Looking to start an e-commerce site? Or just trying to accept credit cards on yout existing website? Below is a summary of the 5 different types of solutions in the e-commerce market ranging from paid listing services all the way to outsourced ecommerce. This article was updated on 4/26/2013.

Paid Listings

Paid listings are not really an e-commerce solution per se, but do allow individuals/businesses the ability to sell goods via a marketplace such as Ebay, Amazon, or comparison shopping engines. Ebay and Amazon offer merchants paid listings in return for fees and a percentage of the transaction which tends to be a 10%- 20% commission or referral fee. Shopping engines charge a pay per click model as advertising fees.

For more sophisticated sellers, paid listings is just another sales channel and not an ecommerce solution but need to be addressed. Most full service e-commerce platforms will allow you to feed your products into these marketplaces.

Summary - Not really an e-commerce solution, but important enough to mention.
