Hi douglasbrand,

Depending on which domain registrar you sign up with, sometimes they offer the option to change the name server so that you can have the domain registered with one company and have hosting at another. One provider that offers this that comes to mind is GoDaddy Domains. There are web hosting providers who require you transfer the domain name to their domain registry service in order to use their hosting services too.

Of course, the easiest option typically is to purchase the domain and web hosting through the same provider but it isn't necessary. You'll just have to do a bit of research before purchasing. Another option also is to purchase a web hosting plan that includes a free domain name. This is actually quite common among many web hosting providers. If you'd like to see who offers free domains, you can try taking a look at our top 10 list of web hosting providers with free domains.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

douglasbrand! yahoo allows to change your nameservers so you may be able to host your website through a different hosting company (you'll have to check with your hosting company if you can host domains registered elsewhere (normally, it's not a problem).

to change your name servers:

Login to Yahoo Domain Control Panel then click on "Manage Advanced DNS Settings" and then click on "Change Nameservers". Find out from your hosting company what nameservers you should change to.

I hope this helps.

great suggestion MegaCorp!

Megacorp is correct - you are not obliged to use yahoo web hosting but any other provider. You can also transfer your domain from yahoo to another provider as well.
